Aerial rendering of the UC Merced Science and Engineering Building in the Academic Quad

Designed for Academic Distinction

Three new wet and dry laboratories anchor the Academic Quad and are connected by a bridge to the existing campus.

The buildings incorporate flexible layouts that support multiple laboratory configurations, encourage community interaction, and provide a durable and efficient structural system.

The exterior materials are designed to be cost-effective and long-lasting, reflecting the architectural expression of UC Merced’s original academic buildings. These materials draw from the agricultural roots of the Central Valley while supporting the functional needs of modern research facilities.

The identity of each laboratory is expressed through its concrete structure. Flat plate slabs and perimeter shear walls frame the buildings, with infill systems that vary in opacity.
